Dutch Born Jan van der Lande started out with a single vase from a designer friend from Amsterdam in 1988. The vase was a hit in New York's Home design stores. Encouraged by the success of his first product Jan brought more innovative Dutch and Belgian home décor product to the US and started to show his line at the New York Tradeshows. The company grew rapidly and was incorporated in 1991.

Kikkerland Design's development took a new direction when Jan met Chico Bicalho who had recently invented the Critter Wind-Up and was selling a hand made version to Mxyplyzyk's in New York. The Critter wind-up family would lay the groundwork for the Kikkerland design philosophy: Humor, charm, added value and affordability

As the company grew more designers joined the Kikkerland Family and contributed their own unique designs to Kikkerland's special brew of products. David Dear's Duck Mirror, Time Flies Wall Clock and the RainbowMaker are certainly examples of products that make people happy. By combining fun, affordability, and usefulness, Kikkerland Design has grown to offer more than 600 products internationally
